2020 has been a challenging year for humanity. The good news is that the spread of new coronavirus is being effectively suppressed in China, and the number of new cases in most other areas besides Hubei has been declining for half a month. The bad news is that the spread of new coronaviruses in other countries, including Japan and South Korea, is on the rise. The economies and education of many countries and regions have been severely affected by the epidemic to varying degrees.

Officials from the Community Investment Inclusive Fund of the Hong Kong Government contacted MeshBox advisor Henry Wang, in the hope that MeshBox and SmartMesh could support their “2020 Virtual Internship Program”, and Mr. Wang gladly agreed. The MeshBox hardware team started looking into IEEE802.11ax this week. The Wi-Fi Alliance has renamed the IEEE 802.11ax standard to Wi-Fi 6, the sixth generation of Wi-Fi. (The existing 802.11ac standard being called Wi-Fi 5.) The speed of Wi-Fi 6 can reach nearly 10 Gbps, which is about 40% faster than Wi-Fi 5.

If deployed properly, a big advantage of Wi-Fi 6 over 5G is that it is easier to support more cost-effective indoor coverage. Wi-Fi devices are more popular than 5G-ready devices or even 4G and 3G compatible devices. Although some of the latest smartphones currently have chips that support 5G (and Wi-Fi 6), most other wireless computing devices such as laptops and smart devices only support Wi-Fi connectivity. Given the popularity of Wi-Fi 6 compatible devices and the deployment schedule for 5G infrastructure, Wi-Fi 6 should have a faster adoption curve.

Compared with 5G, wireless devices themselves tend to require lower power consumption when connected to Wi-Fi. Similarly, the amount of power required to connect and send and receive data will vary greatly due to several factors. Wi-Fi 6 technology is particularly efficient due to an internal feature called Target Wake Time (TWT).

Finally, and often the most important point is the cost. Compared to the typical Wi-Fi 6 deployment life cycle, 5G is much more expensive due to the licensed spectrum needed and cutting-edge performance, which is not required for the most popular applications. This is indeed true for residential Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The cost-effectiveness of providing Wi-Fi in the workplace will be much higher than using a 5G carrier network.
