SmartMesh and MeshBox partner to propose a comprehensive architecture for edge-computing and IoT.
The upcoming fifth generation Information and Communications Technology (ICT), termed the HyperMesh architecture, is needed to support Web 3.0 and the Value Internet. The HyperMesh expands the traditional cloud-based ICT scope in three dimensions:
- From concentrated (centralized) data-center cloud applications to that running on a decentralized edge/fog computing environment.
- Cyber-only to Cyber-Physical, with the addition of IoT devices.
- Information Internet to Value Internet in which both information and an associated value are transacted.
With the scope of ICT expanding the above three dimensions simultaneously, challenges increase exponentially.
Centralized applications, which reside in concentrated datacenters are inefficient and not cost-effective in supporting IoT applications, and are challenged to satisfy inclusive requirements. This is due to applications running in datacenters being too far from the IoT devices to be monitored and controlled. Inclusion is challenging to implement because an asset-heavy network is needed to connect sparsely populated areas to datacenters. Also, datacenters are themselves asset-heavy and too costly for inclusive applications.
Traditional business models and technologies, applied to IoT result in multiple company’s products not being interoperable, with minimal synergies with each other. There exist standardized Low-Power Wide-Area-Network (LPWAN) wireless protocols such as LoRaWAN and NB-IoT from the cellular arena, which are helpful. However, standardized higher layer protocols are lacking.
Solution: Vertically integrated and horizontally broad architecture
A new, comprehensive architecture is needed, consisting of decentralized hardware, communications, blockchain, storage, and task execution. Upon such an architecture, useful decentralized applications can thrive. The HyperMesh Architecture includes the Interconnect (composed of networking and blockchain transactions), decentralized Storage, and decentralized Execution layers. Spanning these layers, the HyperMesh hardware infrastructure, confidentiality, integrity, availability and performance metrics are addressed.
The HyperMesh Architecture encompasses a comprehensive vertical stack which is wholistically designed, with mutually synergistic hardware and software components.
The hardware consists of wired and wireless (satellite) backhaul connections which are standardized, WiFi wide-area mesh network nodes, decentralized edge-storage and edge-computing hardware, IoT access points, and the IoT devices themselves.
The software stack includes the Interconnection, Storage, and Execution layers. The Interconnection layer includes traditional network communications, as well as open-sourced components such as blockchain, layer-2 scalability solution, and cross-chain architectures which allow multiple blockchains to interoperate. The transformation from the Information Internet to the Value-Internet, via Token Switching can leverage the HyperMesh Architecture, benefiting society through inclusivity, giving users ownership of their data, and helping them to monetize their participation.
A set of APIs into the HyperMesh Architecture is being developed within the MetaLife Protocol Layer, which simplifies the building of Decentralized Applications, utility tokens and NFTs for such, and governance through DAOs.
The MetaLife protocol layer uses the HyperMesh architectural layers and builds a common set of protocols which can be used across multiple Decentralized Applications. This allows application developers to re-use common elements within the MetaLife protocol layer such as P2P social networking communication, decentralized identity, reputation, and governance.
MetaLife protocols, built on the HyperMesh Architecture, enables Web 3.0, and can horizontally disrupt many industries including supply chains, finance, healthcare, and energy.

About SmartMesh® Foundation
SmartMesh Foundation Pte. Ltd. (Token Symbol: SMT), a Singapore-based firm established in 2017, aims to build the global Value Internet and Web3.0 ecosystem with decentralized mesh network and blockchain technology, realizing its vision of “Connect the Unconnected, Bank the Unbanked”. HyperMesh, a low latency, highly energy-efficient and integrated infrastructure, enables value to be transacted across all participants (peers and machines) – a process we refer to as Token Switching, with or without internet. HyperMesh is powered by Spectrum blockchain, Photon layer 2 and Atmosphere cross-chain architectures. Creating an open and inclusive platform, HyperMesh ecosystem partners are building disruptive and innovative applications for inclusive connectivity, financial services, education, energy and IoT solutions.
